    Userbility Test

    Usability Test is critical to companies now.
    1.     Technology advanced far slower than years before, the model of technology driven is not sustainable right now.
    2.     Companies should be more product driven and customer driven
    3.     Consumers don’t know what they want, they can just decide when you offer
     
    A very good example is the iPhone. It’s quite inspiring phone and as for the revolutionary user experience.
    1. Compelling UI
    2. Elegant mechanical design
    3. Simply for consumer.
    In one word, I love the phone.
    Some tech fans may complain that Apple restrict so many operations on the phone, you can not customize everything. But I believe 90% of the consumers not care about it. What they care about is the usability. But the PDA phones made the operations so complex that most of people don’t know how to use them.
    Many improvements are not relevant to technology, such as the position sensors and the ambient light sensors have been around for years. It’s really nothing special. But Apple made it perfect in usage. They cover a lot of details which made you think they really put thoughts on the product. E.g. when you pull out the earphone, the iPod will suspend and when you plug in again, the iPod will resume automatically. It’s small but will save me a lot of time in manually start/stop it.

    You can use those tools in different product stages:
    1. Ideation: vision, ethnographic field study, focus groups, diary studies, survey, data mining
    2. Pre launch: Card Sorting, paper prototype, usability studies, participatory design, desirability study and field study
    3. Post Launch: usability benchmarking, online assessment, customer emails, surveys and A/B testing
     
    Among them, A/B Test is quite popular in internet business. A formal description can be found at wikipedia:
     
    A/B testing (also known as split testing) is a method of advertising testing by which a baseline control sample is compared to a variety of single-variable test samples in order to improve response rates. A classic direct mail tactic, this method has been recently adopted within the interactive space to test tactics such as banner ads, emails and landing pages.
     
    It has been widely used in Advertisement industry, which turned out to be quite useful in new tech industry.

    Micronas Financial Report

    Micronas currently is the parent company of iKonvergenz, which I have served for a year. It's a billion dollar company produce and design ICs. Financial report could be downloaded from the website.
     
    I believe financial related industry could be very promising in near future especially in China. You could feel it's booming. I've been interested in Financial for a long time, but with too high sink cost I will never make a living on that. But better learn something, 'cause it's a money business, could be very useful to achieve your personal dream.
     
    Some points during my study of the financial report stated as below:
    IFRS-国际财务报告标准,现在国际化深入到各个领域,关于财报的标准也国际标准化起来,以前伦敦、香港和纽约的证券市场对公司的会计制度要求不一样,而现在要求国化标准化一些,这样投资者可以看得更清楚,对比的更好。
     
    会计-功能是为公司记帐并且分析公司的运营情况,而且在财报上打扮一下公司,让公司在外人面前好看一些。并且记帐更Smart一些,让公司可以多创收,少交税。
    审计-功能就是查公司记帐是否履行会计制度,有没有做假帐
     
    Goodwill-商誉,即是公司的无形资产。外国好像不是随便说多少就是多少的,好像有专门的方法来测定。并且在公司合并的时候,溢价的部分可以由goodwill来抵除。
     
    各国的财报大体差不多,只是名词有所不同。
    Net sales, Margin, Operating profit, Income taxes, earing per share, Assets, intangible assets, long term loans, Current Assets, Inventories, Cash, Shareholder's equity, issued capital, retained earnings, deferred tax liability, accrued income taxes
    这些在中国的会计中也用,换个头脸在英文中出现,一开始还真蒙了。还好有google,用半天时间搞明白,其实真是会者不难。
     
    现在金融真是太需要了,其实没什么非常深的奥义,除非去研究经济学,而且还是中国的经济学。但是赚钱是足够了,本来就是钱的学问嘛。
     
    举个例子,Morgan Stanely搞IPO蒙牛赚了550%,Baidu.com的deal我就不用多说了。

    Two Passes

    There are two passes to the succeed i think, for the situation like me, without much capital and biz experience. One is step by step to the top. Create my own small business then expand. The other way is to delve into the technology and ogle venture capital to do big business at the beginning.

    There are basically difference between the two passes. The different strategies always affact the action i should take now.

    If i choose the first kind of pass, i should focus on small capital business, such as eCommerce service, websites and so on.  Most of famous entrepreneurs took this way. Bill Gates, Herry Ford, McDell. Rich Dad and my brother also take this way. VC will not easily granted to the new comer unless in the era of internet. I can not expect how crazy time it is. For some people, it's really a once in a life oppurtunity. But only a few will succeed and survive. Now VC will be more cautious about the investment.

    If i choose the second way, like Zhang Zhaoyang or Wang Zhidong, i must delve into the newest technology and wait for the next time. And i will pay a lot of energy to draw in the VC and meet with other people. In China, it is really posible to draw in government capital for this. But hard, especially i have no relationship and background.

    So the best way for me is start from the first pass. Collect exp, relationship, if the company runs well, maybe can draw into capital itself. If not very well, the enough exp will help me start a new firm and take the second pass. Just like Chen Tianqiao, he is really the entrepreneur, with goal oriented.

    Is there any possible to take the second pass, Doing digital TV manufacturing? If i study the idtv thoroughly and expertise in doing the hardware of the dtv, will it possible that i go back to china and find some capital to creat a new brand of dtv or stb? Possible, but not probably. But i will pay attention to this possiblity.

    Conclusion:

    1. Start from small company, provide simple and market need product and service with little capital

    2. Learn how to do biz, collect exp, relationship.

    3. Collect Tech, pay attention to VC

    My Future Technology Industries

    i believe more and more people will live the new life. digitization, connectivity, globlization is a must and reality. Market+Technolog=Fortune.

    My problem is i have only one man, myself. I cannot do great thing without other people's help. So no matter what i will do, i must contact with other people and convice other people to do the things we all benefit. Just talk.

    I can see all of the former dreams gradually come to truth. The internet fairy seems correct and reality in the future. And the steps toward is unblockable. More and more people do business, consume and entertainment here. More and more time and life spend on here. So i can see numerous jobs to do, and it's a great oppurtunity for the entrepreneurs.

    It's a dillimma for me, to do what biz? hardware, software, internet, IC, i'm related to all of the areas, but only have strong background in embedded system design. But for the new, noname, nomoney entrepreneurs maybe start from a simple service or product is easier and expandable.

    New fancy ideas always need great investment, and here is not internet era, the venture capital is not easy to get, unless u have tech or biz advantages. So i have to depend on myself start with limited capital and do it myself. Although small, i can collect exps and ideas and capitals and relationship.

    So aim at simple service or product market, high tech is need by not much. Internet is ok, digital tv is better.

    Several time i want to make it clear the big picture of the digital TV industry. Maybe it's not so big and easy to do business. And the broadcast industry in China is not as strong as network operating co. and telecom giants.

    First of all, make clear the concept of digital TV. digital TV is just specify the transimtion stage of the tv broadcasting. the advantages of dtv are more accurate, more clear and low noise, and future interactive is an option.

    The TV industry in China is not so developed. It's a cause not only the technology but the people who make the program and professionals and the customers of the tv program. But sooner or later we can see all the TV show will be as good as taiwan's and u.s. The content is another topic. The easier thing is the technology. One bite of the market will bring me a great fortune.

    The problem is where should i swoop in. Now i'm working at a dtv manufacturer design house to supply total solution for the factories. I personally tatolly agree this business mode. But things seem not as easy as i thought. The hardware is not easy to do, and R&D itself will cost a lot of money. What's more, the production itself is deeply integrated into the R&D. So almost all the manufacturer itself at last will have their own R&D team. it just happened at the mobile solution buyer of China. While, R&D is not easy to do, who will win the customer, that's a question. But at least, it is worthy of a try. The potential buyers will not scarce.

    The trend of the future dtv is the combination of the PC feature. A big market of U.S. TV is dominated by cable operators. That maybe same in china's future. As we can see, the PC industry was booming these years, then the mobiles. They are developing very fast, and i can see no much further steps here in tv industry. The next generation tv maybe will be led by the PC and mobile manufacturers. Fancy things and features will be expected here. Otherwise, the internet, pc, mobiles will substitue the tv mode.

    Future tv industry may cultive various biz modes. The programs can be sell program by program just like the mp3. Of couse, the tradition broadcast channel will still there. public tv is also a needy. The market and customers' need is a big factor.
